From First Bite to Last: My Honest Review of Denny's

It was after a check-up at the hospital, and I wasn’t allowed to eat until the health examination was over. My father and I had already planned to visit a restaurant café afterward, and by then I was starving and excited to finally eat at Denny’s. Before I get into the review, here’s a quick introduction.

Denny’s may have started in California in 1953, but the Japanese branch operates as its own franchise under Seven & i Holdings, the company that also runs 7-Eleven. Unlike the American version, Denny’s Japan offers a menu tailored to local tastes, combining Japanese dishes with Western classics like burgers. The overall vibe feels closer to a Japanese family restaurant, with different portion sizes and a wider selection of meals and desserts at reasonable prices. You can even stop by just for a simple cup of coffee, similar to a café.

The Ambiance:

The overall style feels very cozy, with warm lighting and grey floral wallpaper that gives the space a slightly luxurious touch. Plants placed along the walls and borders add even more warmth to the atmosphere. Although there were quite a lot of people dining in, the mood remained pleasantly lively, and the noise level stayed comfortably low. You can even enjoy soft jazz music playing in the background while you eat.

The restaurant was spotless from the moment we stepped inside. Even the restroom was impressively clean, with floral wallpaper in shades of white and pastel pink that made the space feel surprisingly cozy.

The Service:

As soon as we walked in, a staff member greeted us with a warm smile and guided us to our seats. They introduced us to the lunch menu right away, which included a free drink bar option. Throughout the meal, the staff was attentive and quick to clear our empty plates. Even when we were leaving, they remained kind and polite until the very end.

The food did take a little longer to arrive, but considering how busy it was during our visit, it was understandable. What mattered most to me was that the dishes looked exactly like they did on the menu, and they tasted just as expected.

The Food:

Omelette and Shrimp Fry with Special Ketchup

My father ordered the tokusei kechappu no omu & ebi fry (omelette and shrimp with special ketchup). According to him, it was really delicious, and he finished the entire plate in just a few minutes without leaving a single bite behind.

As for me, I ended up ordering three items from the menu: the minute steak with a regular portion of rice, the meat and potato gratin, and a half-sized garden pancake.

My first bite was a spoonful of the omurice my father shared with me, and it really was as delicious as he said. The egg was perfectly moist, and the seasoned rice underneath had a gentle ketchup flavor that paired beautifully with the special ketchup sauce on top. The sauce wasn’t thick at all; it leaned more watery, but the balance of ingredients made it taste smooth and savory. The ketchup wasn’t overpowering or too sharp, just the right amount of tang, making it easy to eat and enjoy without feeling overwhelmed.

Minute Steak and Regular Sized Rice

The second bite was from the first dish I ordered for myself: the Minute Steak. I’ve never really learned how to cook steak properly, nor have I been to a fancy restaurant where steak is the specialty, so I don’t have much to compare it to. But the moment I took my first bite, it felt quite tough. It took some time to chew it down into a soft enough texture to swallow.

The sauce I chose had a sweet and savory flavor that paired really well with the meat and made it easier to eat. The potato on the side was soft and easy to chew, and it practically melted in my mouth, which made it enjoyable. The onions underneath the pork had a nice crunch, but they were a bit bland on their own. With the sauce, though, they tasted much better.

The rice was fluffy with just the right amount of moisture and stickiness, making it a great match for the meal. Altogether, the flavors blended into a satisfying salty goodness that I genuinely enjoyed. I just wish the pork had been softer and more tender. I would not recommend this dish to anyone with a weak jaw or tooth pain because it was quite tough to eat.

The third bite, which was my second dish, was the Meat and Potato Gratin with a small serving of salad on the side.

The dish looked incredibly cheesy and I couldn’t wait to taste it. My first bite honestly left me speechless because it was so creamy and smooth. The potatoes were boiled perfectly and melted in my mouth, and the macaroni was cooked just right. It wasn’t soggy or crunchy, but had a pleasant firmness that I personally enjoy in pasta. The seasoning was spot on and the ingredients were well balanced throughout the dish.

I was also really glad I chose the salad on the side because it made such a great palate cleanser. It shifted the flavors from rich and creamy to something crisp with a light savory-sour dressing, which helped me enjoy the meal all the way through.

Half Garden Pancake

For my last bite, I ordered a dessert, which is always the highlight of any meal for me. I went with the half garden pancake, and the moment I saw it on the menu, I knew I had to try it because of how beautiful it looked. It took a little while to arrive, but the wait was completely worth it. The dessert looked exactly like its picture, and I felt genuinely excited to dig in.

It came with four small round pancakes decorated with mint leaves, fruits, whipped cream, and a scoop of yellow ice cream on the side. Everything was dusted with powdered sugar and drizzled with what seemed to be blueberry syrup.

I tried the fruit first, but it was too sour for my taste so I didn’t enjoy that part. The rest of the dessert, however, tasted amazing on its own. But the moment I combined the pancake, ice cream, and whipped cream together, I was honestly blown away. The soft pancake, cold sweet ice cream, and airy whipped cream, along with the syrup and powdered sugar, created such a perfect mix. I kept taking bite after bite, and by the time I reached my last piece, I felt a little sad that it was almost over. Even so, I was really happy I chose this dessert and got to enjoy something different from my usual matcha treats.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed my dine-in experience at Denny’s here in Japan and would happily visit again. There are still so many dishes I want to try, especially the desserts, because everything on that section of the menu looked absolutely mouth-watering.

It’s a great place to eat with family or by yourself, whether you want a full meal or just want to relax with a cup of coffee. The food was delicious, the interior felt cozy, and everything inside was impressively clean. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly but satisfying meal, this is definitely a spot worth considering.

Many Denny’s locations in Japan are open 24 hours, seven days a week, including holidays. Some branches open around 6 a.m. and close around midnight. Hours can vary depending on the area, staffing, and local regulations, so it’s worth checking ahead if you plan to visit at a specific time.

Lastly, here is a list of the things we ordered all in all, how much each dish was, and the total of what we had spent:

Omelette & Shrimp Fry with Special Ketchup         1,309 yen

Minute Steak                                                           1,639 yen

Set Drink Bar                                                              451 yen

Rice (Regular)                                                            275 yen

Meat & Potato Gratin                                               1,419 yen

Half Sized Garden Pancake                                       693 yen

Total:                                                                        5,786 yen

A set drink bar is a self-service drink station you can add to your meal for a small extra fee, commonly found in Japanese family restaurants like Denny’s. It’s one of the reasons these places are popular for studying, hanging out, or taking long breaks since you can drink as much as you want without feeling rushed. Since I only got myself oolong tea, I decided not to include a full review of it.
